What Can I do to help My Child in Maths?

Be Supportive

We use maths in our everyday life, so it is important for your child's future that they are successful in mathematics. One of the easiest ways to help ensure that this happens is to be supportive of their experiences in maths. You are your child's most important role model and their attitude towards maths is likely to reflect your own.  Encourage them to give things a go, share their thinking and have fun sharing the learning journey together!

 Listen to Them

Your children will be learning a wide variety of ways to solve problems, and encourage them to explain their thinking to you.  They may need to use materials to help them too, like counters or pen and paper.  Let them show you some new and exciting ways of solving problems and see if you can give these strategies a go yourself.

Give Them Opportunities to Do Maths

We know maths is everywhere and giving your child an authentic context to experience their maths will make all the difference in their learning. Interacting with maths in our everyday life is important; it makes maths relevant and fun!

Here are some great ways to practice maths at home:

·               Money - counting and calculating. Pocket money, banking, shopping...

·               Measuring things - lengths, areas, volumes, cooking ingredients...

·               Traveling - reading numbers on signs for young children or calculating distances and speeds for older children.

·               Board Games - Monopoly, Bingo, board games, playing cards...

·               Reading and using time, bus timetables, TV guides, and train timetables.
